Brand monitoring
Also known as: brand tracking, brand mention monitoring, media monitoring
In short
Brand monitoring is the systematic tracking of where and how a brand is mentioned across the web — press, social platforms, forums, reviews and increasingly AI answers. Its purpose is to turn scattered mentions into something countable, so changes in perception and visibility are noticed rather than guessed at.
The blind spot in conventional monitoring
Traditional monitoring tools crawl published pages. That works for press, blogs, forums and social posts, because those all exist at a URL somebody can fetch.
An AI answer does not. It is generated privately, in response to one person's question, and never published. No crawler will ever find it. If an assistant tells ten thousand buyers that your competitor is the better choice, no monitoring tool built on crawling will report it.
The only way to observe that channel is to ask the engines the same questions your customers ask and record the answers — which is a different mechanism from crawling, and why it is usually a separate tool.
What to actually track
- Volume — how often you are mentioned, per channel.
- Sentiment — how you are characterised when mentioned. See brand sentiment.
- Accuracy — whether what is said about you is true. Wrong pricing or outdated features repeated by an assistant is a distinct and fixable problem.
- Share — your mentions as a proportion of your category's. See AI share of voice.
Monitoring is only useful if it ends in an action
The common failure is a dashboard nobody acts on. Every recurring mention should resolve to something: a thread worth answering, a listing worth claiming, a page worth updating, or a factual error worth correcting at its source. Monitoring that does not produce a next action is a subscription, not a strategy.
Frequently asked questions
- What should brand monitoring cover?
- Owned channels, earned press, social platforms, community forums, review sites and AI answer engines. The last is the newest and the one most tools still miss, because a mention inside a ChatGPT answer is not published anywhere a crawler can find.
- How is brand monitoring different from social listening?
- Social listening is a subset covering social platforms. Brand monitoring is the wider practice across every surface where your name appears. The distinction matters because the highest-influence surfaces for purchase decisions — community threads, review sites, AI answers — are mostly not social platforms.
- How often should you monitor?
- Weekly is enough for most brands and matches how quickly AI answers shift. Daily monitoring generates noise you will not act on; monthly is slow enough that a reputation problem is established before you see it.
Related terms
- Brand mention
A brand mention is when the prose of an AI answer names your brand. It is tracked separately from a citation, which only means the answer's source list included your domain. A mention puts your name in front of the reader; a citation may not.
- Brand sentiment
Brand sentiment is the emotional tone of what is said about a brand — positive, negative or neutral — measured across mentions and aggregated into a trend. In AI answers it extends beyond tone to accuracy: how an engine characterises your product matters as much as whether it sounds favourable.
- AI visibility
AI visibility is how often AI answer engines name and cite your brand in response to the questions your customers ask. It is measured as two separate rates per engine — how often the prose names you, and how often the citations include your domain — tracked across repeated runs rather than single answers.
- Brand visibility
Brand visibility is how often and how prominently a brand appears in the places its buyers are looking. It has traditionally been measured through search rankings, impressions and media coverage; the newer and harder component is whether AI answer engines name the brand when asked what to buy.
