Content & Earned Levers更新于

Digital PR

又称: online PR, link PR, media outreach

一句话解释

Digital PR is the practice of earning coverage, mentions and links on publications you do not own, using newsworthy material rather than paid placement. Because AI answer engines name brands they encounter on the sources they read, earned coverage now influences AI recommendations as directly as it influences reputation.

Why PR moved into the visibility stack

An AI engine writes recommendations by reading sources. Those sources are overwhelmingly things other people published — roundups, reviews, community threads, news coverage. Your own site contributes, but it cannot name you as the independent choice.

This makes earned coverage unusually leveraged right now. One inclusion in a piece that engines already cite for your category can move visibility more than a quarter of publishing on your own domain.

Original data is the most reliable angle

The pitch that works most consistently is one nobody else can make: data you have and others do not. Product usage patterns, aggregate anonymised findings, a survey of your own market.

It works for two reasons. Journalists need something new to report, and AI engines cite statistics with attribution — so a figure that becomes the reference number for your category carries your name every time it is quoted.

Unlinked mentions count more than they used to

Link-focused campaigns discard coverage that does not include a link. For AI visibility that is a mistake: engines read the text, not the link graph, and a brand named in a paragraph is named whether or not the name is hyperlinked. Track mentions, not just links, or you will undercount the results of your own work.

The unglamorous part

Most of digital PR is a list of specific people, a specific reason each would care, and a follow-up. It is closer to sales than to content, which is why it sits unstaffed at most companies and why the ones who do it consistently pull ahead.

常见问题

How is digital PR different from traditional PR?
The goal set is wider. Traditional PR optimizes for coverage and message control; digital PR also targets the durable artefacts — the linked mention, the inclusion in a roundup, the quoted statistic — that keep working in search and AI answers long after the news cycle.
Is digital PR just link building?
No, though it overlaps. Link building pursues the link; digital PR pursues the coverage, and the link is one outcome. The distinction matters more now that unlinked brand mentions influence AI answers, which link-focused campaigns systematically undervalue.
What makes a digital PR campaign work?
Something genuinely worth reporting: original data, a contrarian and defensible position, or expertise on a story already running. Campaigns fail when the pitch is the product rather than a story, which is most of them.

  • Listicle

A listicle is an article structured as a numbered or bulleted list — most commercially, the 'best X for Y' roundup. Third-party listicles are disproportionately cited by AI answer engines, which makes being included in one of the strongest external levers available for getting named in answers.

  • Brand authority

Brand authority is the credibility a brand has earned in its category, and the signals that communicate that credibility to people and to search systems. It is built through independent corroboration — what others say about you — far more than through anything you publish about yourself.

  • Brand visibility

Brand visibility is how often and how prominently a brand appears in the places its buyers are looking. It has traditionally been measured through search rankings, impressions and media coverage; the newer and harder component is whether AI answer engines name the brand when asked what to buy.

  • Parasite SEO

Parasite SEO is publishing content on a high-authority third-party site in order to rank on that site's reputation instead of your own. Google named the tactic site reputation abuse in March 2024 and has issued manual actions against host sites since May 2024, which largely ended its commercial form.
