Where to promote your brand for free: 26 platforms, ranked by whether AI engines actually read them
A maintained list of free platforms worth your time, sorted into start-here, worth-it-if-it-fits, and skip. Judged on AI citation evidence rather than domain authority.
一句话解释
The free platforms worth your time are the ones AI engines actually read: Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Quora, your Google Business Profile, and a publishing home like Substack. Almost all of them mark outbound links nofollow, so they do little for Google rankings — but AI engines ignore the nofollow attribute entirely.
要点
- Nearly every free platform marks outbound links nofollow, so the 'borrow their authority' pitch does not hold up for Google rankings.
- AI engines do not use the nofollow attribute at all, which is why these platforms now matter for a completely different reason than the one usually given.
- Six platforms cover almost any business: Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Quora, Google Business Profile, and one publishing home.
- YouTube is the second most-cited domain in AI answers and is missing from almost every viral list of free platforms.
- For local and multi-location businesses, AI visibility is roughly 30x harder than ranking in Google's local pack — the Business Profile is the highest-leverage free asset there is.
- Document dumps like Slideshare, Calameo, KeepAndShare and Shutterfly have no evidence behind them. They pad the list, not your visibility.

Most lists of "free platforms to promote your brand" are sorted by domain rating. That is the wrong sort order, and it produces lists with Shutterfly on them and YouTube missing.
Here is the list sorted by something that matters: whether the platform is a place AI engines actually read when a customer asks a question about your category, and whether it suits your kind of business.
The link argument does not survive contact with the facts
The usual pitch is that a big domain lends you its authority. Check the
markup and that mostly disappears. Reddit, Quora and most forums mark
outbound links nofollow. Every link on LinkedIn, Facebook and
Instagram is nofollow. YouTube description links are nofollow. Medium
adds both nofollow and ugc.
Substack is a genuine exception
— its links carry no nofollow or ugc attribute at all.
So as a link-building strategy, almost this entire list is weak by design. That is not a secret; it is how these platforms have protected themselves from spam for fifteen years.
But that argument is about the wrong search engine
Here is the part that changes the conclusion: AI engines do not use the nofollow attribute. It is an instruction to a link-graph crawler about whether to pass ranking credit. An engine assembling an answer is reading pages and citing sources; there is no PageRank being withheld, because there is no PageRank involved.
Which means the platforms that are weakest for link building are, right now, among the strongest for being read and quoted. Peec AI's analysis of 30 million cited sources across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews found Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia and Forbes to be the most-cited domains, with Yelp, G2 and Facebook also prominent. Every one of those marks its outbound links nofollow.
That is the whole reason to revisit this list in 2026. Not borrowed authority. Being readable where the reading happens.
Six platforms cover almost any business
If you do nothing else, do these. They are not category-specific, they are where questions get asked, and five of the six are read heavily by the engines.
Reddit and YouTube are the two most-cited domains in AI answers. LinkedIn climbed the citation rankings sharply through 2026. Quora is structurally the right shape — a question with a complete answer under it is exactly the unit engines retrieve. Google Business Profile is the spine of every local AI answer. And one publishing home, on Substack or your own domain, gives the others something substantial to point at.
If you serve a local area, start with the profile
The gap between traditional local visibility and AI visibility is larger than almost anyone expects. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, covering more than 350,000 locations across 2,751 multi-location brands, found only 1.2% of locations were recommended by ChatGPT, against 11% by Gemini and 7.4% by Perplexity — while the same brands appeared in Google's local 3-pack 35.9% of the time. Local AI visibility is up to 30 times harder to earn than a local pack slot, and strong traditional performance does not carry over.
The Business Profile is free, takes an afternoon, and is the input those answers are built from. It is the highest-return item on this page for anyone with a service area.
How to read the table
- Best for is the honest answer to "does this suit my business?" Roughly half of these platforms are excellent for someone and a waste of time for everyone else.
- AI citations is how often engines cite the domain, from the citation studies above — not a guess at how good the platform is.
- Links is the outbound link treatment, so you can stop expecting ranking value where there isn't any.
- Effort is ongoing commitment, not setup time. A profile you claim once is Low. A community where you have to earn standing is High.
Two rules that apply everywhere
Republish with a canonical tag, or don't republish. Medium, dev.to and Hashnode all let you set a canonical URL pointing back to the original on your own site. That is what stops a syndicated copy from competing with the page you actually want to win. Substack has no canonical control, so it gets original work rather than duplicates.
Participate before you promote. Every community platform on this list polices self-promotion, and the enforcement is not subtle — Reddit's long-standing guidance is roughly nine genuinely useful contributions for every one that mentions you, and individual subreddits are stricter still. Content that reads as marketing gets removed, and removed content is invisible to engines as well as humans. This is also why we draft replies for you to post from your own account, and never post as you: bulk posting is exactly what gets accounts banned.
Keeping this list honest
This page is maintained rather than published once. Platforms move — LinkedIn's citation share climbed sharply in a single year, and the studies underpinning these rankings get rerun. When a platform earns its place or loses it, the table changes and the date at the top changes with it.
If a platform is not in the table, it is usually because we could not find evidence it does anything for a business. That is a deliberately higher bar than "has a high domain rating and accepts signups".
清单
Start here — works for almost any business
| 平台 | 适合 | AI 引用 | 链接 | 投入 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RedditCommunity The most-cited domain across the major engines. Answer inside threads that already rank; new promotional posts get removed, and removed content is not read by anything. | Any category with an active subreddit | High | nofollow | High |
| YouTubeVideo Second most-cited domain and absent from nearly every viral list. The transcript is what engines read, so a plainly-spoken answer to a real question outperforms production value. | Universal | High | nofollow | High |
| LinkedInProfile + publishing Rose sharply in engine citation rankings through 2026. A complete company page plus posts from a real person named at the company. | Universal, strongest in B2B | High | nofollow | Medium |
| QuoraCommunity Question-and-answer pages are structurally the format engines retrieve. Lower ceiling than Reddit, far lower competition for a genuinely complete answer. | Universal | Medium | nofollow | Medium |
| Google Business ProfileProfile The spine of local AI answers: categories, services, hours, service area, description. Free, fast, and the single highest-leverage item on this list if you serve a place. | Any business with a location or service area | High | none | Low |
| SubstackPublishing One of the very few platforms here whose outbound links are not nofollow, and you keep the subscriber list. Publish original work; it offers no canonical control for republished posts. | Universal | Low | dofollow | Medium |
Worth it if it fits your business
| 平台 | 适合 | AI 引用 | 链接 | 投入 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| G2Reviews Prominent in Perplexity's citations on B2B questions. Claiming and completing the profile is free; review volume is not the lever, an accurate profile is. | B2B software | High | nofollow | Low |
| CapterraReviews Same job as G2 with different coverage. Worth claiming, not worth grinding. | B2B software | Medium | nofollow | Low |
| YelpReviews Google's AI surfaces lean on Yelp noticeably more than other engines do. Claim the listing and keep the details consistent with your Business Profile. | Local and consumer | High | nofollow | Low |
| TrustpilotReviews Useful as a credibility source engines can quote. Free tier covers profile claiming and responses. | Ecommerce and consumer services | Medium | nofollow | Low |
| Product HuntLaunch One concentrated day of attention plus a durable product page. The page outlives the launch and is what gets read later. | Tech products | Medium | nofollow | Medium |
| CrunchbaseProfile A canonical entity record engines and journalists check. Claiming and keeping it accurate is free and takes an hour. | Startups and tech companies | Medium | nofollow | Low |
| GitHubProfile A README is documentation engines read directly. Only meaningful if you genuinely ship code. | Developer tools | Medium | dofollow on profiles | Medium |
| Stack Overflow / Stack ExchangeCommunity Answers persist for years and get read for years. Self-promotion rules are strictly enforced; disclose your affiliation. | Technical products | Medium | nofollow | High |
| MediumPublishing Supports canonical tags, so it is safe for republishing work that lives on your own site. Do not expect the domain to lend you anything. | Universal | Low | nofollow / ugc | Medium |
| dev.toPublishing Canonical support and a real community. Distribution beats the SEO value by a wide margin. | Developer audiences | Low | nofollow / ugc | Medium |
| HashnodePublishing Same shape as dev.to with a smaller audience. Canonical support makes cross-posting safe. | Developer audiences | Low | nofollow / ugc | Medium |
| Facebook Pages & GroupsSocial Google's AI surfaces cite Facebook more than most people expect. Groups are where local recommendation questions actually get asked. | Local and consumer | Medium | nofollow | Medium |
| PinterestVisual A search engine more than a social network, with genuine commercial intent in the right categories and none in the wrong ones. | Ecommerce, home, food, design | Low | nofollow | Medium |
| Instagram / TikTokSocial Real demand generation, negligible citation value. Judge them on customers reached, never on SEO. | Consumer brands | Low | nofollow | High |
| XSocial Fast distribution to a narrow set of industries, short half-life. Posts are rarely cited later. | Tech, media, B2B founders | Low | nofollow | High |
| ThumbtackMarketplace A lead source rather than a visibility play. Free to list; leads are paid. | Home and local services | Low | nofollow | Low |
| Wikipedia / WikidataReference Heavily cited and almost entirely out of reach: notability is enforced and self-written articles get deleted. Do not commission one. A Wikidata entry is the reachable half if you already have independent coverage. | Only genuinely notable organizations | High | nofollow | High |
On the viral lists — skip these
| 平台 | 适合 | AI 引用 | 链接 | 投入 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slideshare / CalameoDocuments Old domains that accept uploads. No evidence that a deck dumped here earns rankings or citations for a business. | Nobody, realistically | Unproven | nofollow | Low |
| KeepAndShare / Shutterfly / ImgurFile hosting File and photo hosting, not publishing platforms. They appear on these lists because they have old domains and accept uploads. | Nobody | Unproven | nofollow | Low |
| Google Sites / Notion sites / BloggerSite builders You can publish a page, but you inherit none of the parent's strength — you are just running a second, weaker website you also have to maintain. | Nobody, for this purpose | Unproven | varies | Medium |
常见问题
- Do free platforms still help SEO?
- Rarely through links. Reddit, Quora, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube descriptions and Medium all mark outbound links nofollow or ugc, so they pass little or no ranking power. They help through referral traffic, brand searches, and — increasingly the main reason — by being sources AI engines read when answering questions about your category.
- Which free platform should I start with?
- Whichever one your customers already use to ask questions about your category. For most businesses that is Reddit, and for anything local it is your Google Business Profile. Starting with a platform because it has a high domain rating is how people end up with twenty dead profiles.
- Does posting on Medium or Substack hurt my own site's SEO?
- Only if you republish without a canonical tag. Medium, dev.to and Hashnode all support setting a canonical URL back to the original on your domain, which is what keeps a republished post from competing with you. Substack does not offer canonical control, so publish original work there rather than duplicates.
- Is it worth creating profiles on every platform on the list?
- No, and it is the most common way this advice goes wrong. An abandoned profile is a stale, thin page carrying your brand name. A handful of complete, active profiles on the platforms that suit your business beats presence everywhere.
- How many of these actually get cited by AI engines?
- A small minority. Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and Wikipedia lead the citation rankings across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI surfaces, with Yelp, G2 and Facebook also prominent. Most of the rest are worth doing for reach or credibility, not citations — the table marks which is which.
