AI citation
Also known as: AI citations, LLM citation, cited source
In short
An AI citation is a source that an answer engine links or attributes when producing an answer. Being cited means the engine used or referenced your page. It does not mean the answer recommended your brand — those are separate outcomes, and roughly six in ten citations never name the brand they cite.
What earns a citation
Engines cite the source that resolved the specific question they retrieved for. In practice that rewards three things:
- Specificity. A page that answers one question completely beats a page that covers the topic broadly.
- Extractability. A self-contained passage under a question-shaped heading can be quoted; a point spread across three paragraphs cannot.
- Freshness. Pages that are kept current earn substantially more citations than pages left to sit. This is the best-evidenced lever you fully control — see content refresh.
Note what is absent from that list: domain authority, backlink volume, and schema markup. None of them has been shown to predict citation.
Citation is not recommendation
The distinction matters more than anything else on this page. An engine cites the source of a fact and names the brand it is recommending, and those are frequently different entities. A neutral explainer gets quoted while the answer recommends whoever the explainer's comparison table favoured.
That state — cited without being named — is a ghost citation, and it is why citation counts alone are a misleading success metric.
Tracking them
Record, per question and per engine, whether your domain appeared in the citation list and whether the prose named you. The gap between those two rates is the most actionable number in AI visibility work, and neither is visible in Search Console or analytics.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you get cited by AI?
- Be reachable by AI crawlers, answer a specific question completely in a passage that stands alone, and keep the page current. Engines cite pages that resolve the question they were retrieved for — not the pages with the strongest link profile.
- Do AI citations drive traffic?
- Some, but far less than their influence suggests. Citations usually appear as small links beside or beneath the answer, and most readers act on the answer rather than the sources. The value of a citation is influence over what the answer says, not the click.
- Which domains get cited most by AI engines?
- Analysis of 30 million cited sources across the major engines found Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia and Forbes leading, with Yelp, G2 and Facebook also prominent. The ranking differs by engine and inverts for high-intent commercial questions, where niche category sources dominate.
Related terms
- Ghost citation
A ghost citation is an AI answer that cites your page as a source without ever naming your brand in the prose. The engine used your content and attributed it in a link list, but the reader sees a recommendation for somebody else. Around six in ten AI citations are ghost citations.
- Brand mention
A brand mention is when the prose of an AI answer names your brand. It is tracked separately from a citation, which only means the answer's source list included your domain. A mention puts your name in front of the reader; a citation may not.
- AI visibility
AI visibility is how often AI answer engines name and cite your brand in response to the questions your customers ask. It is measured as two separate rates per engine — how often the prose names you, and how often the citations include your domain — tracked across repeated runs rather than single answers.
- Content refresh
A content refresh is the substantive update of an existing page — correcting facts, adding current data, and revising what changed — rather than publishing something new. Pages that are kept current earn meaningfully more AI citations than pages left to sit, making it the best-evidenced on-site visibility lever you fully control.
