Ghost citation
Also known as: cited but not named, unnamed citation
In short
A ghost citation is an AI answer that cites your page as a source without ever naming your brand in the prose. The engine used your content and attributed it in a link list, but the reader sees a recommendation for somebody else. Around six in ten AI citations are ghost citations.
Why ghost citations matter
Being cited and being named are different outcomes, and only one of them sells anything. A reader who asks "what's the best tool for X" and gets a confident paragraph recommending three competitors will act on those three names. That your domain appears in a source list below the answer changes almost nothing about what they do next.
This is the single most common failure state in AI visibility, and it is invisible to conventional tooling: rank trackers measure position in a list of links, not whether a synthesized answer said your name.
Why it happens
Engines cite the source of a fact and name the brand they are recommending. Those are frequently different entities. If your best page is a neutral explainer, an engine will happily lift the explanation and attribute the link while recommending whoever the page's own comparison table favored.
Content that only teaches gets cited. Content that positions gets named.
How to fix it
- Make your brand the subject of your own sentences on pages you expect to be cited — not a vendor-neutral narrator.
- Publish the comparison and alternatives pages yourself, where naming your brand is the point of the page rather than a lapse in neutrality.
- Get onto the third-party lists engines read, where being named is the format.
How to measure it
Record two rates separately for every tracked question and every engine: whether the answer's prose named you, and whether the answer's citations included your domain. The gap between those two rates is your ghost citation rate. CiteCycle exposes this directly — the Answers explorer filters for the cited-but-not-mentioned state, and run detail flags it with its own verdict chip.

- Brand mention
A brand mention is when the prose of an AI answer names your brand. It is tracked separately from a citation, which only means the answer's source list included your domain. A mention puts your name in front of the reader; a citation may not.
- AI citation
An AI citation is a source that an answer engine links or attributes when producing an answer. Being cited means the engine used or referenced your page. It does not mean the answer recommended your brand — those are separate outcomes, and roughly six in ten citations never name the brand they cite.
- AI visibility
AI visibility is how often AI answer engines name and cite your brand in response to the questions your customers ask. It is measured as two separate rates per engine — how often the prose names you, and how often the citations include your domain — tracked across repeated runs rather than single answers.
- AI share of voice
AI share of voice is the portion of all brand mentions across AI answers to your tracked questions that belong to you. If ten answers name brands twenty times and four of those are you, your share is twenty percent. It is read alongside average position, per engine, across runs.
