AI search

Also known as: AI-powered search, AI search engines, generative search

In short

AI search is any search experience that returns a written, synthesized answer rather than a ranked list of links. It covers dedicated assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity, and AI layers built into traditional engines such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.

The label covers three fairly different products.

TypeExamplesHow you appear
Dedicated assistantsChatGPT, Claude, PerplexityCited as a source, named in the answer
AI layers on search enginesAI Overviews, AI ModeCited in the overview, ranked below it
AI features in vertical platformsRetail, app store and marketplace assistantsProduct data and reviews

They differ enough that visibility in one predicts very little about the others — published analyses put the overlap between engines' cited sources at roughly a tenth.

What actually changed

Classic search returns documents and leaves you to do the synthesis. AI search does the synthesis and returns one answer. Three consequences follow:

  • There is no page two. A handful of brands are named; everyone else is absent rather than lower down.
  • The query got longer. People ask full questions with context attached — see conversational search.
  • The measurement broke. Rank tells you nothing about whether an answer named you, and clicks understate influence because most answers resolve without one.

What it does not change

Being genuinely useful. Engines still retrieve pages that answer a question better than the alternatives, and they still favour sources that are specific, current and attributable. The mechanics of visibility changed; the underlying requirement to be worth citing did not.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI search replacing Google?
It is changing Google more than replacing it. Google now answers many queries directly through AI Overviews and AI Mode while still serving links beneath. The meaningful shift is not which company wins but that the answer, rather than the link, is becoming the product.
How does AI search find information?
Most consumer AI search products retrieve live web pages at answer time rather than answering purely from training data. The system expands the question into research queries, fetches matching pages, and writes an answer grounded in what it read.
What does AI search mean for websites?
Two things. Fewer clicks for questions that can be answered in a paragraph, and a new competition for being the source the answer is built from. Sites whose only value was holding a fact lose; sites worth quoting and worth visiting are affected far less.

  • Answer engine

An answer engine is a system that responds to a question with a synthesized answer rather than a ranked list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews are answer engines. They read a small set of sources, write a single response, and cite some of what they read.

  • AI Overviews

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries Google places above the traditional results for many queries. They synthesize several sources into a short answer with links to what was used, pushing the classic blue links further down the page and often resolving the query without a click.

  • Google AI Mode

AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience: a dedicated interface where the response is a written answer you can follow up on, rather than an AI summary sitting above a results page. It replaces the ten-link page entirely for the queries it handles.

  • Conversational search

Conversational search is querying a search system in natural language — full questions rather than keyword fragments — often across several turns where each question builds on the last. It is the input style answer engines are designed for, and it makes the question, not the keyword, the unit of demand.
