An answer engine is a system that responds to a question with a synthesized answer rather than a ranked list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews are answer engines. They read a small set of sources, write a single response, and cite some of what they read.
How an answer engine works
The sequence is roughly the same across systems. A user asks a question in natural language. The engine expands it into several narrower research queries — see fan-out query. It retrieves and reads a small set of pages. It writes one answer, usually naming a few brands, and attaches citations to some of what it read.
Every step is a filter you can be excluded at. Being crawlable gets you into the index. Being relevant and well-structured gets you retrieved. Being named on the sources it reads gets you into the prose.
Why "there is no position ten"
In a list of ten results, tenth place still exists and still gets clicks. In a synthesized answer, three or four brands get named and everyone else is absent. The distribution is far more winner-take-most than a results page, which is what makes the shift consequential rather than cosmetic.
Citation is not endorsement
An answer engine may cite your page as the source of a fact while recommending a competitor in the same paragraph. This is common enough to have its own name — a ghost citation — and it is why AI visibility measurement tracks being named and being cited as two separate rates rather than one score.

- Partly. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode behave as answer engines, while the classic blue-link results below them remain a search engine. Most Google sessions now involve both on the same page, which is why visibility has to be measured separately for each.
- What is the difference between a search engine and an answer engine?
- A search engine returns documents and leaves the synthesis to you. An answer engine does the synthesis itself and returns one response, citing a handful of sources. The practical consequence is that there is no second page — you are either in the answer or absent from it.
- Which answer engines should a brand track?
- The ones your customers use. For most businesses that means ChatGPT, Google's AI surfaces, Perplexity and Gemini. Track them separately: published analyses find the engines agree on which sources to cite only about a tenth of the time, so a blended score hides which channel you are losing.
