Answer engine optimization (AEO)
Also known as: AEO, answer engine optimisation
In short
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that an answer engine can extract it as a direct answer to a question. It targets the passage rather than the page: a question-shaped heading with a complete, self-contained answer directly beneath it.
Why the passage is the unit
Answer engines do not summarize whole pages. They retrieve passages, and they assemble an answer from several of them. A page that buries its answer in the fourth paragraph loses to a page that leads with it, even when the buried answer is better.
This is why the structure of a page matters as much as its substance. The test is simple: take any section out of the page and read it alone. If it still answers something, it is extractable. If it needs the preceding paragraph for context, it is not.
What AEO looks like in practice
- Question-shaped headings. Write the H2 the way a person asks it, not the way a marketer titles it.
- Answer first, context second. The first sentence under the heading should be the answer. Everything else expands it.
- One idea per paragraph, point first. No throat-clearing.
- Comparison tables where a "X vs Y" question exists — tables are among the most reliably extracted structures on a page.
- Stable heading anchors, so a specific passage can be linked directly.
AEO and zero-click search
AEO accepts a trade that some publishers resist: the reader may get their answer without visiting. That is already the reality of zero-click search. The compensation is attribution — an answer built from your passage that names your brand is worth more than a click from someone who bounces. This is why AEO alone is not a strategy; you also have to be the brand the answer names, which is what brand visibility work is for.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
- AEO is about the shape of your content — writing extractable, question-shaped passages. GEO is the broader discipline of getting named and cited across AI engines, which includes off-site levers like third-party list placement. AEO is one of the strongest inputs to GEO, not a substitute for it.
- Is AEO just featured snippet optimization?
- It grew out of it and uses the same mechanics — a direct answer under a question heading. The difference is the destination. Featured snippet work targets one box on Google's results page; AEO targets any system that assembles an answer from passages, including ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
- How long should an AEO answer be?
- Forty to sixty words for the lead definition. Long enough to be complete and self-contained, short enough to be quoted whole. If a passage only makes sense with the paragraph above it, it is not extractable.
Related terms
- AEO
AEO stands for answer engine optimization: the practice of structuring content so an answer engine can extract it as a direct answer. In marketing contexts AEO almost always means this. The same three letters are used for account executive operations and for aerospace engineering, which are unrelated.
- Generative engine optimization (GEO)
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting a brand named and cited inside answers produced by AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Where SEO competes for a position in a ranked list of links, GEO competes for a place inside a single synthesized answer.
- Answer engine
An answer engine is a system that responds to a question with a synthesized answer rather than a ranked list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews are answer engines. They read a small set of sources, write a single response, and cite some of what they read.
- Zero-click search
A zero-click search is one where the user gets what they needed without clicking through to any website — the answer appeared in the results page or in an AI-generated response. The share has risen sharply as answer engines and AI Overviews satisfy more questions directly.
