GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what's the difference, and which do you need?

SEO competes for a ranked list of links, AEO for being extracted as the answer, GEO for being named and cited in AI-written answers. A plain comparison of goals, metrics, levers and overlap — and how to prioritize.

In short

SEO (search engine optimization) competes for a position in Google's ranked list of links. AEO (answer engine optimization) shapes content so a system can extract it as the direct answer. GEO (generative engine optimization) is getting your brand named and cited inside AI-written answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews. Most brands need all three, in that order of overlap.

Key takeaways

  • SEO is about the page and its rank; AEO is about the passage and whether it can be lifted; GEO is about the brand and whether it is named across engines.
  • AEO is a technique that feeds both SEO (featured snippets) and GEO (passages engines quote). It is not a separate channel.
  • GEO adds off-site work SEO and AEO do not cover: getting onto the third-party lists, reviews and threads AI engines cite.
  • Rankings do not transfer: about two thirds of pages in Google's top three never appear in AI answers to the same question.
  • Measure each on its own terms — rank and clicks for SEO, mention and citation rates per engine for GEO.

Three acronyms now describe overlapping work, and the vocabulary has not settled. They are easier to keep apart once you ask what each one is competing for.

The short version

  • SEO — search engine optimization. Competing for a position in a ranked list of links on Google or Bing.
  • AEO — answer engine optimization. Shaping content so a system can lift it as the direct answer — featured snippets, voice assistants, AI answers.
  • GEO — generative engine optimization. Getting your brand named and your site cited inside answers that AI engines write.

What they share

All three reward the same foundations, which is why the labels blur:

  • Pages that answer the question directly, early, in plain words.
  • Crawlable, fast, well-structured sites. A page an engine cannot fetch cannot rank, be quoted, or be cited.
  • Topical depth. Covering a subject properly beats a thin page per keyword, for search and for answers.
  • Freshness on pages that matter. Updated pages earn more AI citations, and Google rewards maintained content too.

If you already do good SEO, you have a head start on the other two — but only a head start.

Where they differ

SEO: the page and its rank

SEO is still the largest discoverable channel for most businesses, and its mechanics are well understood: relevance to a keyword, links, and a site Google can crawl and trust. Its weakness in an AI world is that a rank says nothing about whether you are in the answer a customer reads. Roughly two thirds of pages in Google's top three never appear in AI answers to the same question.

AEO: the passage

AEO is a writing technique more than a channel. A question-shaped heading, a complete answer in the first sentence or two beneath it, and a self-contained passage that still makes sense when lifted out of the page. It helps you win featured snippets in Google and helps AI engines quote you, because both retrieve passages, not pages. See AEO for the acronym's other meanings.

GEO: the brand, across engines

GEO is the only one of the three that is mostly about other people's pages. AI engines name brands that appear consistently across what they read — "best X" lists, comparison articles, review sites, Reddit and YouTube — so a large part of GEO is getting onto the specific sources engines already cite for your questions. It also adds two things SEO never had to deal with:

  • Mentions and citations diverge. Engines often use a page without naming its brand — a ghost citation — and name brands without citing their sites.
  • Every engine is a separate channel. ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude agree on sources only about a tenth of the time, so visibility is measured per engine.

Which should you prioritize?

Work per question, not per acronym:

  1. List the questions your customers ask — in Google and in AI assistants.
  2. Check where you stand for each: your Google rank from Search Console, and whether AI answers name you. The free AI visibility checker gives a quick read across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
  3. Ranked in Google but missing from AI answers: this is a GEO gap. Get onto the third-party pages the engines cite, and make your own page lead with the answer.
  4. Missing from both: start with a page that answers the question directly (AEO), then build the SEO and GEO around it.
  5. Strong in both: keep the pages fresh and watch the trend weekly.

How to measure each

  • SEO: rank, impressions and clicks per query in Google Search Console.
  • AEO: whether your passage is the one shown — featured snippets in Search Console, and quoted passages in AI answers.
  • GEO: mention rate and citation rate per engine, tracked on the same questions over time, plus your AI share of voice against competitors. The comparison of AI visibility tools covers how to track it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO optimizes a page to rank in a list of search results for a keyword. GEO optimizes for a brand to be named, and its site cited, inside a single answer an AI engine writes for a full question. SEO is measured by rank and clicks; GEO by how often answers mention and cite you, per engine.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO targets the whole page's position in results. AEO targets a passage: a question-shaped heading with a complete, self-contained answer beneath it, written so a featured snippet, voice assistant or AI engine can lift it directly. AEO is one technique inside good SEO and good GEO.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
They overlap but are not the same. AEO is about the shape of content on your own pages. GEO is the broader goal of being named and cited across AI engines, which also depends on off-site sources like comparison lists, reviews and community threads.
Should I stop doing SEO and focus on GEO?
No. Google search is still a large demand channel, and AI engines that browse the web lean on many of the same pages. The practical approach is per question: where you rank in Google but are missing from AI answers, add the GEO work; where you have neither, start with pages that answer the question directly.
Is AI SEO the same as GEO?
Mostly, as people use the terms. 'AI SEO' is the colloquial catch-all for adapting search work to AI answers. GEO is the more precise name for the AI-answer part, and AEO for the content-shaping part. The vocabulary has not settled, so expect them to be used interchangeably.
