Citation rate

Also known as: citation share, cited percentage

In short

Citation rate is the proportion of AI answers to your tracked questions whose sources include your domain. It is tracked separately from mention rate — how often the prose names you — because a brand can be cited constantly without ever being recommended.

Why it is a rate, not a count

Counts move when your question set changes. Add ten questions and your citation count rises whether or not anything improved. The rate normalises that, which makes it the only version safe to trend over time.

Two disciplines keep it honest:

  • Fix the question set. Changing it breaks the series. Note the change and restart the baseline rather than pretending the numbers are comparable.
  • Compute per engine. Engines overlap on cited sources only about a tenth of the time, so a blended rate averages away the channel you are losing.

What a low rate points at

A low citation rate usually means retrieval, not quality. Your pages are not being pulled in for these questions, which is typically one of:

  • AccessAI crawlers cannot reach the site.
  • Structure — the answer is buried rather than in a self-contained passage.
  • Coverage — there simply is no page answering that question.
  • Staleness — see content refresh.

The limit worth stating

Citation rate says nothing about whether the answer recommended you. That gap is the ghost citation problem, and it is why this metric should never be reported alone. A dashboard showing only citation rate will look healthy while a competitor takes every recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate citation rate?
Divide the number of answers citing your domain by the total number of answers returned for your tracked questions, within a fixed window and per engine. The denominator matters: adding questions changes the rate without anything about your visibility changing.
What is a good citation rate?
There is no meaningful benchmark, because it depends entirely on your question set. A narrow set of questions you are well positioned for produces a high rate; a broad category sweep produces a low one. Compare against your own previous runs and against competitors on the same questions.
Should citation rate or mention rate be the priority?
Mention rate, if you have to choose. Citations influence the answer; mentions put your name in front of the buyer. A high citation rate with a low mention rate is a specific and common failure — see ghost citation.

Related terms

  • AI citation

An AI citation is a source that an answer engine links or attributes when producing an answer. Being cited means the engine used or referenced your page. It does not mean the answer recommended your brand — those are separate outcomes, and roughly six in ten citations never name the brand they cite.

  • Ghost citation

A ghost citation is an AI answer that cites your page as a source without ever naming your brand in the prose. The engine used your content and attributed it in a link list, but the reader sees a recommendation for somebody else. Around six in ten AI citations are ghost citations.

  • AI visibility

AI visibility is how often AI answer engines name and cite your brand in response to the questions your customers ask. It is measured as two separate rates per engine — how often the prose names you, and how often the citations include your domain — tracked across repeated runs rather than single answers.

  • Brand mention

A brand mention is when the prose of an AI answer names your brand. It is tracked separately from a citation, which only means the answer's source list included your domain. A mention puts your name in front of the reader; a citation may not.
