Content & Earned Levers更新于

Content refresh

又称: content update, republishing, content refreshing

一句话解释

A content refresh is the substantive update of an existing page — correcting facts, adding current data, and revising what changed — rather than publishing something new. Pages that are kept current earn meaningfully more AI citations than pages left to sit, making it the best-evidenced on-site visibility lever you fully control.

Why freshness carries weight in AI answers

An answer engine is assembling a response it will present as current. A page that visibly reflects the present state of a topic is safer to quote than one that may be describing something that changed. The effect is measurable and it is larger than most on-site levers people spend time on.

It is also the rare lever that is entirely yours. You cannot make a third-party list include you and you cannot edit a community thread, but you can update your own page this afternoon.

What a real refresh involves

  • Correct what is now wrong. Prices, features, dates, competitor claims.
  • Add what is now known. New data, a finding published since, a case the original could not cite.
  • Cut what stopped mattering. Refreshes that only add get bloated and worse.
  • Restate the answer. Make sure the lead passage still answers the question directly — this is what gets lifted.
  • Update the visible date, because you actually changed something.

Picking targets

The highest-return refresh is a page that is already cited or ranking. It has proven it can be retrieved; you are improving something with demonstrated demand rather than gambling on something new.

The second-best is a page that ranks in Google but never appears in AI answers — a gap that usually means the content is fine but the structure is not extractable. Those often need restructuring more than rewriting.

常见问题

How often should you refresh content?
When something in it stops being true, and otherwise on a cadence matched to how fast the topic moves — quarterly for fast-moving categories, annually for stable ones. Refreshing on a calendar regardless of whether anything changed produces churn, not freshness.
Does changing the date on a page count as a refresh?
No, and it is worth being blunt about it. Updating a timestamp without changing the content is a transparent signal that systems and readers both discount. The freshness effect comes from the content actually being current.
Which pages should you refresh first?
The ones already being cited or ranking, where a small improvement compounds against existing visibility. Refreshing a page nobody reads produces a fresher page nobody reads.

  • AI citation

An AI citation is a source that an answer engine links or attributes when producing an answer. Being cited means the engine used or referenced your page. It does not mean the answer recommended your brand — those are separate outcomes, and roughly six in ten citations never name the brand they cite.

  • Listicle

A listicle is an article structured as a numbered or bulleted list — most commercially, the 'best X for Y' roundup. Third-party listicles are disproportionately cited by AI answer engines, which makes being included in one of the strongest external levers available for getting named in answers.

  • AI visibility

AI visibility is how often AI answer engines name and cite your brand in response to the questions your customers ask. It is measured as two separate rates per engine — how often the prose names you, and how often the citations include your domain — tracked across repeated runs rather than single answers.
