AI visibility
又称: AI search visibility, LLM visibility, visibility in AI answers
一句话解释
AI visibility is how often AI answer engines name and cite your brand in response to the questions your customers ask. It is measured as two separate rates per engine — how often the prose names you, and how often the citations include your domain — tracked across repeated runs rather than single answers.
Why it needs its own measurement
Every conventional marketing metric assumes a click. AI visibility frequently produces none: a customer asks which tool to use, gets three brand names in a paragraph, and acts on one of them without visiting any website. That conversation is invisible to analytics, invisible to rank trackers, and it is where a growing share of purchase decisions now starts.
The only way to observe it is to ask the engines the same questions your customers ask and record what comes back.
The two rates
| What it means | What a low rate tells you | |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | The answer's prose names your brand | You are not on the sources engines read |
| Citation rate | The answer's citations include your domain | Your pages are not being retrieved |
High citations with low mentions is the ghost citation state — your content is doing the work while a competitor gets the recommendation. It is the most common failure mode and it is invisible unless you track the rates separately.
Per engine, across runs
Two disciplines make the numbers trustworthy.
Per engine. Published analyses put the overlap between engines' cited sources at around a tenth. Winning ChatGPT tells you very little about Gemini. A single blended score averages away the channel you are losing.
Across runs. Answers are probabilistic. Ask the same question twice and you may get different brands. One run is a sample; the trend across runs is the signal. Reading a single answer as a verdict is the most common analytical mistake in this field.
常见问题
- How do you measure AI visibility?
- Fix a list of the questions your customers actually ask, run them through each engine on a schedule, and record two rates: mention rate, where the answer's prose names your brand, and citation rate, where its citations include your domain. Aggregate over runs, because a single answer carries sampling variance.
- Why not use one AI visibility score?
- Because it hides the two things you would act on. A brand cited constantly but never named has a content problem; a brand named but never cited has a different one. Blending them into one number, or blending across engines that agree only about a tenth of the time, removes the signal you need.
- Can Google Analytics or Search Console show AI visibility?
- No. Search Console reports Google Search impressions and clicks, not what an AI answer said. Analytics can show referral traffic from AI products where the referrer is passed, but a mention that generates no click leaves no trace in either — which is most of them.
相关术语
- Brand visibility
Brand visibility is how often and how prominently a brand appears in the places its buyers are looking. It has traditionally been measured through search rankings, impressions and media coverage; the newer and harder component is whether AI answer engines name the brand when asked what to buy.
- AI citation
An AI citation is a source that an answer engine links or attributes when producing an answer. Being cited means the engine used or referenced your page. It does not mean the answer recommended your brand — those are separate outcomes, and roughly six in ten citations never name the brand they cite.
- Brand mention
A brand mention is when the prose of an AI answer names your brand. It is tracked separately from a citation, which only means the answer's source list included your domain. A mention puts your name in front of the reader; a citation may not.
- Ghost citation
A ghost citation is an AI answer that cites your page as a source without ever naming your brand in the prose. The engine used your content and attributed it in a link list, but the reader sees a recommendation for somebody else. Around six in ten AI citations are ghost citations.
- AI share of voice
AI share of voice is the portion of all brand mentions across AI answers to your tracked questions that belong to you. If ten answers name brands twenty times and four of those are you, your share is twenty percent. It is read alongside average position, per engine, across runs.
