Featured snippet

又称: position zero, answer box, snippet

一句话解释

A featured snippet is a passage Google extracts from a ranking page and displays at the top of results to answer a query directly, with attribution and a link. Unlike an AI Overview it quotes one source verbatim rather than synthesizing several.

Why it still matters in an AI world

Featured snippets are the original extraction surface, and the skill of winning one transfers directly to newer surfaces. The requirement is identical: a complete, self-contained answer in a short passage, placed where a machine expects to find it.

A page structured to win snippets is structured to be lifted by an AI engine. That overlap is the practical reason this classic-SEO term belongs in a glossary about AI visibility — see answer engine optimization.

The mechanics

  • Rank first. Snippets are drawn almost entirely from page-one results. You cannot skip this.
  • Match the question. The heading should be the question as people ask it.
  • Answer immediately. The first sentence under the heading is the answer. No preamble.
  • Match the format. "How to" questions favour ordered lists, comparisons favour tables, definitions favour a short paragraph.
  • Keep it standalone. If the passage needs the paragraph above it, it will not be lifted.

The trade-off, honestly

Winning a snippet often means the searcher gets what they needed without clicking. That is a real cost, and it is smaller than the alternative: the query is going to be answered on the page either way, and the only question is whether it is answered from your content with your name on it, or from a competitor's.

常见问题

How do you get a featured snippet?
Rank on the first page for the query, then answer it directly in a self-contained passage of roughly 40 to 60 words, placed immediately under a heading that matches the question. Lists and tables win their own snippet formats.
Is a featured snippet worth having if it stops the click?
Usually yes. It is attributed and prominent, it beats being fourth on the page, and for many queries the alternative is not a click but a competitor's snippet. The exception is content whose only value was the fact itself.
What is the difference between a featured snippet and an AI Overview?
A snippet quotes one page verbatim with a link. An overview synthesizes several sources into new text. A snippet has a single winner you can compete for; an overview has contributors and no controllable wording.

  • SERP

A SERP is a search engine results page — everything returned for a query, not just the ten blue links. It includes ads, featured snippets, local packs, image and video blocks, People Also Ask, and increasingly an AI-generated answer above all of them.

  • AI Overviews

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries Google places above the traditional results for many queries. They synthesize several sources into a short answer with links to what was used, pushing the classic blue links further down the page and often resolving the query without a click.

  • Answer engine optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that an answer engine can extract it as a direct answer to a question. It targets the passage rather than the page: a question-shaped heading with a complete, self-contained answer directly beneath it.

  • Zero-click search

A zero-click search is one where the user gets what they needed without clicking through to any website — the answer appeared in the results page or in an AI-generated response. The share has risen sharply as answer engines and AI Overviews satisfy more questions directly.
