How Engines Retrieve & Rank Sources更新于

Topical authority

又称: topic authority, subject authority, topical depth

一句话解释

Topical authority is the degree to which a site covers a subject comprehensively and credibly, rather than touching it once. It is built by covering a topic's real question space in depth, with internal connections between the pieces, and it makes a site a more reliable source to retrieve from.

Depth beats breadth, concretely

A site with three articles about ten subjects has thirty pages and no authority anywhere. A site with thirty articles about one subject has the same page count and a defensible position.

The reason is retrieval rather than reputation. When someone asks a specific question, the site that has a page answering exactly that question wins the retrieval. Broad coverage means you have a page adjacent to most questions and a page answering few of them.

What a complete topic looks like

  • The foundational definitions — what the terms mean.
  • The mechanism — how the thing works.
  • The decisions — comparisons, alternatives, how to choose.
  • The failure modes — what goes wrong and why.
  • The evidence — what is measured, and what is merely believed.

A glossary is unusually good at the first of those, which is why definitional content is a common foundation for topical coverage: it creates the vocabulary every other page can link to.

The honest limit

Topical authority is not a score any engine publishes, and it is not a thing you can point at. It is a description of a pattern that correlates with performing well. Treat it as a planning principle — cover a subject properly before starting the next one — rather than as a metric to optimize.

常见问题

How do you build topical authority?
Pick a subject narrow enough to cover completely, map the questions people actually ask about it, answer each one properly on its own page, and link the pages to each other. Depth on a narrow topic beats shallow coverage of a broad one.
How long does topical authority take?
Months, not weeks, and it is a function of coverage completeness rather than elapsed time. A site that answers thirty real questions about one subject gets there faster than one publishing weekly about everything for a year.
Does topical authority help with AI citations?
Indirectly. Engines retrieve passages, not sites, so no authority score gets you cited. What deep coverage does is give you a passage that specifically answers more of the questions being asked — which is the thing that actually gets retrieved.

  • Entity SEO

Entity SEO is the practice of making search and AI systems recognise your brand as a distinct, well-defined thing rather than a string of characters. It covers consistent naming, unambiguous descriptions, and corroboration across independent sources so a system can confidently identify who you are.

  • Brand authority

Brand authority is the credibility a brand has earned in its category, and the signals that communicate that credibility to people and to search systems. It is built through independent corroboration — what others say about you — far more than through anything you publish about yourself.

  • Semantic search

Semantic search matches queries to content by meaning rather than by matching words. Text is converted into vectors — numerical representations where similar meanings sit close together — so a query can retrieve a passage that answers it without sharing any of its vocabulary.

  • Content refresh

A content refresh is the substantive update of an existing page — correcting facts, adding current data, and revising what changed — rather than publishing something new. Pages that are kept current earn meaningfully more AI citations than pages left to sit, making it the best-evidenced on-site visibility lever you fully control.
