Generative engine optimization (GEO)

又称: GEO, generative search optimization, GEO marketing

一句话解释

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting a brand named and cited inside answers produced by AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Where SEO competes for a position in a ranked list of links, GEO competes for a place inside a single synthesized answer.

What GEO actually optimizes for

An AI engine does not match a keyword to a page. It takes a full question, runs its own research queries, reads a small set of sources, and writes a synthesis that names specific brands. Three things decide whether you appear in it: whether the engine can reach your site at all, whether your pages are among the sources it reads, and whether your brand is among the names it writes.

Those last two are different outcomes. Being cited means your domain appears in the source list. Being named means the prose says your brand. A ghost citation is the state where the first happens without the second — around six in ten AI citations never name the brand whose content they used.

GEO vs SEO

SEOGEO
Competes forA position in ten linksA place in one answer
Unit of demandKeywordFull question
Success signalRankNamed and cited
Measured byRank trackersPer-engine mention and citation rates
Failure modePage twoAbsent from the answer entirely

There is no position ten in an answer. That is the structural difference everything else follows from.

Why rankings do not carry over

Roughly two thirds of pages ranking in Google's top three never appear in AI answers to the same question. Ranking signals reward a page's authority for a keyword; an engine building an answer wants passages it can lift, sources it can attribute, and agreement across what it read. Overlapping tests, but genuinely different ones.

What moves GEO

The short list with evidence behind it: placement on the third-party lists engines already read, freshness on your own cited pages, owning the comparison query, and answer-shaped structure that puts the answer in the first sentence under a question-shaped heading. Crawler access is the unglamorous prerequisite — if GPTBot and its peers are blocked, every other lever is zeroed.

Deliberately not on that list: llms.txt, which has no measured effect, and piling on schema markup, which published analyses have not linked to any change in AI citation rates.

常见问题

What does GEO stand for?
Generative engine optimization. It is sometimes written as generative search optimization. The acronym collides with geography and geolocation, which is why most practitioners write it out in full at first use.
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links against a keyword. GEO optimizes for inclusion in a single synthesized answer to a full question. They overlap on content quality and diverge on measurement, target queries, and which levers actually move results.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Search and AI answers are separate demand channels drawing on overlapping but distinct sources. Most brands need both, and the useful comparison is per question: where you have Google demand and no AI presence, you have a gap worth closing.

  • Answer engine optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that an answer engine can extract it as a direct answer to a question. It targets the passage rather than the page: a question-shaped heading with a complete, self-contained answer directly beneath it.

  • AI visibility

AI visibility is how often AI answer engines name and cite your brand in response to the questions your customers ask. It is measured as two separate rates per engine — how often the prose names you, and how often the citations include your domain — tracked across repeated runs rather than single answers.

  • AI citation

An AI citation is a source that an answer engine links or attributes when producing an answer. Being cited means the engine used or referenced your page. It does not mean the answer recommended your brand — those are separate outcomes, and roughly six in ten citations never name the brand they cite.

  • AEO

AEO stands for answer engine optimization: the practice of structuring content so an answer engine can extract it as a direct answer. In marketing contexts AEO almost always means this. The same three letters are used for account executive operations and for aerospace engineering, which are unrelated.
